"Come join the dance, that doth entrance,
And tread the circle's round.
Be of good cheer, that gather here,
Upon this merry ground."

The Holy Days of Wicca

I was once asked, in all sincerity, how my religion can have any holidays if I don't believe in God or Jesus as my savior. If I don't go to church on Sunday, then how do I know when to show reverence to my Gods? I was slightly confused and more than a little surprised since the person asking was much older than I was and, I would assume, realized that there were other religions in the world besides their's. My first response was, "You've heard of Hanuakkah, right? They don't believe Jesus was their savior yet they manage to have quite a few holidays." My friend just looked at me like she thought I was crazy.

The holidays of Wicca are not based on the births or deaths of prophets or saints. Nor are they based on times of suffering or deprevation. Wiccan holy days, or sabbats, are nearly all based on natural occurances. The cycles of Nature make up two-thirds of the Wiccan holidays. The others are based on events pertaining to human life. These events can be naturally occuring or 'man-made.'

[ I highly recommend every Wiccan and Pagan read Mike Nichol's website. The site is dedicated to the Sabbats but all the articles provide information that is very worthwhile. Even if you don't agree with all his opinions, you will definitely benefit from having read his site. ]

In Christianity, there are three different types of holidays or celebrations. The sabbath day is a sort of 'regularly scheduled' day of worship and prayer; Christmas and Easter are annual, or recurring, holidays; births, marriages, and deaths are events in one's life. The Wiccan equivalents to these three types of holidays are detailed in the links at the right.
