Talk To Me
Four times in the year the Great Sabbat Returns, it is then the witches are seen
At Lammas and Candlemas dancing, On May Eve and old Hallowe'en.**

When day-time and night-time are equal, When sun is at greatest and least,
The four Lesser Sabbats are summoned, Again witches gather in feast.

The Wheel of the Year

In most Pagan religions, time is not measured in a linear way. Instead of a "time line", life is represented by a spiral. Think of a spring, or a slinky, curling around to meet itself, touching but not forming a closed circle. This is the Wheel of the Year as well as the Spiral of Life. The Wheel represents the "recurring" Holy Days of Wiccan celebration.

The equinox and solstice sabbats are called the 'low' or 'minor' sabbats. The others are called the 'high' or 'major' sabbats. The major sabbats occur at the mid-point between the solstices and equinoxes. This is the 'height' of the cycle, generally recognized as the most powerful time of any occurance.

In the links provided, I've given the dates of the sabbats and listed the currently popular names and the 'original' names according to Mike Nichols' "Witches Sabbats". [ To read some excellent background info on the Sabbats, I suggest you visit Mike Nichols' pages. Not only is his sabbat information very interesting, every article on his site will provide thought provoking ideas. ]

**This is my slightly revised version of this verse.
